One, two, three into the four… Mic Check

People used to gather celebrate. In the near future people will still gather. But what about now?

Celebrate because you lived another day. Celebrate because tomorrow you have the chance to start all over again. Celebrate because you can read this from a screen (that 25 years ago was available only to a few). Celebrate because you’ve just taken another breath. Don’t hesitate to celebrate if you hear the silence. Celebrate the colours around you. Celebrate the light and the music. Celebrate for every vibration that you feel. Close your eyes, picture yourself on a beach… Celebrate some more.

Invent a festival. Give it a name. Set a day in the calendar. Imagine how would it feel. Even though it’s not due, celebrate it right now. Celebrate the days. Sum up all the numbers that compose your birthday and celebrate.

What’s on the other side? A lot of the people live their lives as there’s no tomorrow; simply put, every thing is bad and the Apocalypse is near. They felt the same last year and the year before. Now they feel better than ever in their misery just because right now their prophecy has been fulfilled. They might be right, but what do they get from this? They feel good for a moment and they get back to how they felt before, waiting for the next catastrophe.

Feeling good or bad, you burn the same amount of calories (even more when you are stressed). Why don’t you take a break and conserve all this waisted energy? Do something crazy right now! Celebrate!

When was the last time you did something for the first time? In the middle of a crisis, you are happy. Celebrate because you’re not on the side; the middle is something after all (in order to get here, you took some action).

Let’s Etarbelec!

Sounds better now!

Where does it come from? Do you need it? Do you crave for it? What’s the worst that could happen if it doesn’t show up?

In this world governed by ideas, there are times when you would give your all in order to catch one of those original thoughts that would change your status. It might take the form of a picture, some inspiring text or motion graphics. Ideas are the new currency.

You trade ideas for attention. The better the ideas, the longer the attention. Keep them coming and you’ll be on the map and people will come back for more. You will make a living out of ideas.

The worst case scenario? In snowbording, you take the biggest falls after you get the taste of riding and want some more. It’s the same with ideas: let’s say you are here, in a place where none of your ideas have stuck, you keep looking until you find a noteworthy one. From now on everything changes. If you never come with something similar, you’ll be remembered as a “one hit wonder” (if anybody will remember you at all).

The place where these ideas come from? In general people call it inspiration, others say that’s something related to geniuses. What the majority doesn’t now (especially the ones who are watching from the comfort of their couches) is that the only thing creation and inspiration have in common is related to a physical act: taking the deep breath before doing the work.

Next time you want to create, you’ll definitely need inspiration. Listen to your thoughts related to the thing that you’ll always wanted to create (there might be a lot of noise that stops you from taking action).

Inspire, expire, inspire, expire.

Do it for 10 seconds then, have a sit and do the work!

On the

’cause it’s like that and that’s the way it is!

You end up doing it on the last moment. You improvise something. It turns out to be ok. Or….

Well, what if you prepared? How would you do it next time?

When it comes out “on the fly” you let your subconscious do its work. It’s like skiing, except you don’t risk breaking your leg. You might feel that there’s a huge leap your taking, but there’s nothing to break here. Maybe you could loose some of your social status but except that, you’re safe.

Why are you playing so safe if you’re safe already? Is there something else about your current situation? How does it fell being a coward. Just before you go to bed, what’s the last thing that comes into your mind? What are the three most beautiful things that happened to you today? Have you left a positive mark on this planet?

Except your creative act, what else benefits from being accomplished “on the fly”? What would benefit from a slow treatment? Does your life worths to be lived “on the fly”?

Just rambling… This text is being written “on the fly”. You can spot its quality from a mile. It lacks clarity. When you’re speeding up, time compresses and you miss all the details: the trees become smaller and the road is narrow. One bad decision and everything falls apart. The good news: you’ll arrive at your destination earlier. The bad news: except finishing you won be enjoying anything else. Time will pass and “i finished faster” would be your only memory, your only story. On the other hand if you stop being a speed junky, you’ll be enjoying all these stories that will be worth being told.

On the fly. What is opposed to this? In the moment? Right now, right here?

The end… You’ll get there anyway, why don’t you smell the roses for the time being?

It’s a blessing. 14:40 left

What should I do now? Where should I go? I should have written this post two hours ago.

Anyway I’m still here. I’m doing it for the sake of the exercise. And this was week number 17. There’s no more energy. Right now my internal battery as less than 3%. It was a great Sunday. I’ve read a couple of pages from “trickster makes the world”. It starts to make sense now: Hermes, Legbda, Coyote, Loki; different names for the same kind of person. She is the artist. She struggles every day to start, and when she does, she is unstoppable.

This is where everything starts. The World was built on the very same principles.

And it works. As long as you do the work, it works. If you’re afraid, you’ll also do it. It’s a matter of time. Sooner or later you would have moved to the next level. You will always ask yourself why haven’t you started it sooner. Everybody has his time. Keep on searching. Be patient. Ask questions. Try to solve interesting problems.

My biggest wins for this week: I’ve made a live dj set comprising of the music I’ve created so far. I’m greatful because Luke has suggested me a great resource related to marketing for musicians (and for independent artists in general). I feel that from tomorrow I’m moving even further with my career as a musician. I need the money in order to move my music to the next level. I feel that the mix and mastering, made by a professional would make a significant difference. I’m also looking forward in using the concepts from “the business model generation” in order to come up with a new business model that will bring me some new insights.

This is the 24th post from the writestreak. I’m on track.

Today I’ve installed an app that resembles the 5minute journal. I will use it for free during the next seven days and see if it worths the investment. Compared to a physical journal the price is a bargain.

2:33 left

I’ve finished the first draft for Ana’s video. I’m happy because I had some fun doing it. How do I know it? Well, I haven’t moved from this chair for 3 hours or so. This definitely says something about the state I’ve been into. It was a kind of flow.

Today I’ve moved four track to Release. It’s the first time when I move tracks into this column by getting through all the steps of the Automatic Music Machine. Thank you Mike!

The rule of three

Is there such a rule? It’s that thing that makes the difference between good and bad storytelling. It’s all about timing, density and contrast. Of course you can break this rule if it’s for a good cause, such as building anticipation or creating some kind of contrast.

Usually the climax comes somewhere around the end of the second third. Followed by the resolution (usually that Hollywood kind of happy end).

If you follow this rule thoroughly, people will follow the story from beginning to end. It work on music too and you don’t really have to tell a whole story (such as in a country song), you can build a micro universe by telling a micro story that builds the energy towards the end of the second third.

This is what house music is all about: playing with energy in 12 acts. You don’t always have lyrics, that’s why the build and release are the most important elements here. If you drop a vocal snippet from time to time, things will take your audience by surprise and you may end up living them wanting for more (which is not as bad as it sounds; addiction to music comes with no side effects — it actually comes with lots of benefits).

These are generic facts. You can use this post as a reminder for the things that you don’t have to miss when you create something for the people to enjoy: music, photography, movies, even a standup comedy act.

While you are here, what does this reminds you of?

Is there life behind the rule of three? Do you see it differently?

There are a lot of people who work outside this rule. By constantly experimenting, they come up with innovative ways of using sound. Because a lot of the time they are ahead of the time, they usually get the appreciation of people like them. The innovators usually come up with the ideas and the creators who are close to the present adopt these ideas and get them into the popular culture.

Taking innovative ideas and remixing them in a way that mimic the rule of three will definitely get you closer to a hit and becoming part of the pop culture hall of fame.

Maybe there should be two different processes: one where you come up with the innovative ideas (this is the place where you are free, with only a couple of rules) and the other one where you add these ideas onto “the rule of three” skeleton.

...but first

You don’t know how you got here. You woke up at 05:00, did some creative work, had a coffee and now it’s 22:52. What happened?

You started with good intentions. Yesterday, around the same time and place you called it a day and you were greatful that you’ll start all over again in the morning. Those good intentions were not enough. There had to be something more. Does it really have to be a life and death situation in order to move on with your plans? Are you afraid of planning? No, there’s no quick fix. You are on your own. Actually everybody is for himself. Whoever tells you he found the answer in a certain book, even though he’s not lying, his solution was only for him.

It all started with you sitting on that chair, opening that book. Today had to be the day, the one when you read a lot and you come up with a lot of insights. Placed the book on your virtual desktop, opened the first page, read a couple of lines… it seemed fresh and interesting. So fresh that you wanted to grasp it all in a bite… but first. This is the moment when you went down the rabbit hole. You felt that you won’t be back for some time but you still opened Facebook. [case closed] You’ve met a friend. He came up with a breakthrough. You left facebook, but this was not it. You had to try this breakthrough. It was too good to be true.  You tested and tested. You see, time flies when you’re testing and having fun at the same time. By the end of this journey you felt depleted. Where where you? …but first… If you could only turn back time and stopped before the “…”

Again and again, tomorrow is another day. Thank God.

I had todo a bit of doodling with fonts. I love fonts. I wonder if Google was here. What if I write a song entitled “Google was here”? Something similar with “Lily was here” but with a crawler flavour.

This was day no 24. Time flies when your having fun.

a Burden

Well well, so you made it to the 22nd Century. That wasn’t so hard after all. You see, all this future came with a lot of weight attached to it. As decades passed, you managed to get a lighter load upon your shoulders, literally speaking. Simply because everything has to balanced, this physical weight went psychical.

It’s a burden you carry everyday, as closer you get to the end of the day, it grows bigger and bigger until it knocks you down. You just want to go to sleep in order to have another chance tomorrow. You live your life just like in that movie where every day was identical to the previous. The bad news is that you are on “repeat mode”. The good news is that each day you plant a seed, a gift for your future self. One day it will start growing into a small flower that will bloom.

When you can’t control it anymore, just take your hands of the steering wheel. Have you ever drove one of those small bumping cars in an amusement park? They feel like you can control until somebody bumps into you unexpectedly and you turn that wheel a bit too much and some kind of mystical force starts steering the wheel out of the blue in the opposite direction. You’re flight or fight instinct tells you to hold tight of the wheel in order to get back on track when letting go would be the real solution here.

It’s all in your head, just let go when you feel that you’ve reached the climax. Go for a walk, indulge yourself with your favourite guilty pleasure and when you feel ready, come back. This way you’ll unload the burden and you’ll turn back to the things that really matter to you. The things that got you into this game after all.

You’ve heard it all before: it’s all in your head. It’s hard, but it’s better than the alternative, better than carrying this burden on your shoulders.

But what if you loose?

What does “winning” really mean? You can win and feel like a looser while you can loose and feel that you’ve won! It’s all about why are you here, in this race. Either in your head or a real race, you have a reason to compete.

People feel motivated when there are rules and a prize. The higher the stake, the better the you’ll feel if you win. From your childhood, you like playing games.

It’s funny how we forgot that in the beginning we used to love playing infinite games. There wasn’t a grand prize if you finished first. You could win this game, while your friend won the next one and nobody felt bad. It was all about fun.

You could learn a lot from watching kids playing. What if you could have fun even though you loose? That’s nice until there are things to loose (money would be a good example). If you’re not into gambling, you could learn a lot of things from loosing; also, if there’s money on the table, the things you learn will stick with you. As long as this kind of experiences don’t turn into fear, you’re on the right path to become better.

How often would you like to win? “Every time” Ok, I get it, but how often do you play in order to win? What’s better to win once every two games or twenty times in forty games? Which situation would bring you the best experience?

What if you’re a winner every day when you get out of bed? You could also be a winner if you don’t drink that beer. Does it count? Do you really need a leaderboard in order to feel like a winner? Do you really have to climb mount Everest? Is there something simple but noteworthy and mentionable? Just breathe! (this might seem like a win under certain circumstances) Now do it again…

What were your small wins for today?

Winning’s winning after all!

What if

What if you start everything with “what if”?

Depending on the way you feel about the circumstances you find yourself in, this “what if” will help you move forward. It’s about the way you see possibility. If it’s being used by the lizard brain, “what if” might get you stuck for a while because it will bring all the demons to life.

“I could ask for a rise, but what if I get fired because of my action?” as opposed to “I’ve ran 2 miles, what if I run one more”?

As usual, I started this exercise with the title, without thinking about it thorougly. I’m a bit lost right now because I don’t know exactly where should I go with this post. I’ve been here before, that’s why I decided that every time I feel lost, I keep writing. This way, I know that next time I will be sitting here, it would be easy to keep going. If I get an aha moment along the way, that will be a bonus.

What if I write the post of my life right now. That post that sets you on track. The post that turns you into a star. Just like winning the lottery but without the side effects (of becoming poorer than before winning). When you hit that “post” button, everything becomes a thing of the past.

But why do you post all this unedited text? Aren’t you afraid that somebody will read it and give you some bad feedback? Well, there is a lot of text in here. If anybody would take the time of reading this (instead of reading a good book or watching Netflix), there has to be something good about this text that made read.

That green “publish” button is a gateway. With every push, you make procrastination dissolve drip by drip. But be careful, she will never leave. Her whispers will be always be here with you. Don’t push the button and you’ll be back where you started.

Show up! Write! Push that button!
